The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has received reports of accidental puncturing and burning of the organs during robotic surgery. The FDA has approved da Vinci robotic system for general laparascopic surgical procedures.

The FDA has conducted a survey after they have observed an increase in the number of reports about da Vinci. However, the trend in the adverse reports does not significantly mean that the device is faulty. Sometimes, the upswings occur because there are more surgeons who are using the device.

In January, the FDA began surveying surgeons who use the system about user training, common equipment repairs, patient selection, the complications they witness, and what procedures are the best and least suited for this form of robot-assisted surgery.
